Go to Tools > Internet Options and click the Advanced tab. Go to the Settings option under Browsing and check the boxes 'Disable Script Debugging' and uncheck 'Display a notification about every script error'. This will disable the debug option if you get an error on a page.
Internet
Explorer 5 includes a Windows Radio toolbar that provides streaming radio
playback. By default, the Radio toolbar is not displayed when the browser is
started. To enable or disable the Radio toolbar when the browser is started,
follow these steps in Internet Explorer: On the Tools menu, click Internet
Options. Click the Advanced tab and under Multimedia, click the Always Show
Internet Explorer Radio Bar check box to select it (Uncheck the box to
deselect this option). This option displays the Radio toolbar, provided you
enabled it by clicking Toolbars on the View menu and then clicking Radio.
There
are quite a few utilities out there on the Net, which allow you to manage your
bookmarks online. One such site is www.myhq.com, which allows you to import
and edit your bookmarks online. You can even synchronise your bookmarks and
share them with other users using a utility called BookmarkSync as well as add
bookmarks from your Palm! For that you have to first register yourself at
www.syncit.com
When
you add a site to your bookmark list, you may want to view the page offline
too. For this, you have to use the bookmarks option. Go Favorites > Add to
Favorites. Choose the folder you want the page to be bookmarked in. Above the
Name field, check the box, 'Make available offline'. You can also choose
advanced features such as the level of links in that page that will be
downloaded, as also how you want to synchronize the page when you are
connected. You can even change the settings you have made to any bookmark when
you select Organise Favorites in the Favorites Menu.
There
are different ways in which a Web page can be saved: a) as a text file, b) as
an HTML only page, c) as a complete Web Page (.htm, .html file) and d) as Web
page archive (.mht file) When you save a Web page as Text File: The page text
is saved as a text file and the hyperlinks in the page are lost. HTML: This
saves the page without the images and sounds. The hyperlinks are clickable but
they do not go to the page on the Net as their path changes to your local
folder. Web page complete: A folder with the same name as the .html file is
created in the target folder. This folder contains page contents such as
images and sounds. The links to embedded content in the Web page are
re-written to point to the contents of this new folder. Absolute links such as
a hyperlink to another Web page are not re-written. As long as the folder is
kept with its corresponding .htm file, the open file includes those images and
sounds. Web archive: The Web page saves this information in Multipurpose
Internet Mail Extension HTML (MHTML) format with a .mht file extension. All
relative links in the Web page are remapped and the embedded content is
included in the .mht file, rather than being saved in a separate folder.
Open
Control Panel and double-click on Internet Options. Within the Programs tab,
check the box which says 'Internet Explorer should check to see if it is the
default browser'. Now, try opening any HTML file, select it, then keeping the
[Shift] key pressed, right-click on the file. Select Open With... and in the
Open With dialog box choose the browser program you want it to open in. Check
the box at the bottom, which says 'Always use this program to open this type
of file'.
If
you have Hotbar and it shows its own custom title, you can change it. First,
make sure that Hotbar is disabled at startup. Go to Start > Run and type
msconfig. This will open the System Configuration Utility. Click on the
Startup tab and in the list of programs, uncheck the box for the Hotbar
Program. This will prevent it from running on startup. Now, you can start
making any changes to the Explorer title bar. Open the Registry Editor (Start
> Run, type regedit). Go to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Main In the right pane, either double-click on the Value name 'WindowTitle'
and edit the Value Data or create one. To create a value, right-click anywhere
in the empty portion of the right portion, and click on New > String Value.
Name it WindowTitle. Double-click on it to add a Value Data. Here add whatever
title you want to appear in IE, for example CHIP RulZ!! and click OK. Close
the registry after you make the changes and open a new browser window to view
the change. You may have to even restart to let the change take place.
Go
to www.gohip.com/remove_browser_enhancement.html and download remove.exe. Save
remove.exe to your desktop, and run the file by double-clicking on it. Then
reboot your computer.
Every
time, I type a URL or a username, IE gives me a drop down list of all the
previous entries beginning with that letter. This is very annoying. Can I stop
this from happening? Open IE and go to Tools > Internet Options >
Content. In Personal Information, click on Autocomplete. The Autocomplete
Settings dialog box opens up, which allows you check/uncheck options for Web
addresses, forms, usernames and passwords.
Can
I change the look of my Internet Explorer without having to download programs
that will do that for me? You can change the look of your toolbar if you want
to without downloading any skins. You can have your own bitmap shown on the
Internet Explorer toolbar. This involves using the registry editor. Open the
registry and navigate to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Toolbar In the right pane, right-click and add a new string value, or
modify the existing value, named BackBitmap for IE4 or BackBitmapIE5 for IE5.
To change the Value Data, double-click on the ValueName (BackBitmap) and then
set the value to the path and name of bitmap file you wish to use (for
example, C:\WINDOWS\CLOUDS.BMP). Close the Registry and restart Internet
Explorer for the changes to take effect.
The
supervisor password for Content Advisor is held in the registry. That is why
uninstalling and reinstalling IE will not fix it. Go to the key as shown
below: HKEY_ LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Windows\Current
Version\Policies\Ratings There will be a value name on the right pane,
labelled 'key'. That key holds the encrypted Content Advisor Supervisor
password. Delete that key. That will set the Content Advisor Password to
blank. Then you can go to Tools > Internet Options > Content and disable
the ratings.
When
I browse the Internet using Internet Explorer, a logo is displayed indicating
whether activity is taking place. Can I change this logo? There are two bitmap
files used to display the animated logo. Both can be identical except for
their size. One has to be 38 pixels wide and the other 22 pixels. Using an
image editor such as MS Paint, create an image where equal-sized frames are
stacked vertically within the one larger image. For example, a large icon,
with 10 frames, would be 38 pixels wide and 380 pixels high. When the logo is
animated, the top frame is shown first, then the next and so on, until the
last frame, then the image loops. When the application is idle, then only the
first frame is shown until there is any activity. That is unless an alternate
non-animated logo has been defined using the technique below. Once you have
created the icons you need to register them by opening a key in your registry.
Open the registry editor and locate the key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Toolbar Then create two new string values (right-click anywhere in
the right pane and select New > String Value), or modify the existing
values, named 'SmBrandBitmap' (small image) and 'BrandBitmap' (large image).
To modify, select the value, right-click and select Modify or double-click on
them. The new values should be equal to the full filename of the small (22
pixel) image and large (38 pixel) image, respectively.
These
images are shown when the application is idle. Like the method above there are
two images, one small 22x22 pixel and a larger 38x38 pixel. To activate them,
navigate to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Main and create two string values named 'SmallBitmap' and 'BigBitmap'.
Set their values to equal the filenames of the images. To reset to the default
logos: To restore the default animated logo, delete the 'BrandBitmap' and 'SmBrandBitmap'
string values found under the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Toolbar.
Delete
the 'SmallBitmap' and 'BigBitmap' string values found under the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
There
are many reasons why this error occurs. Some of the reasons and the
corresponding solutions are given below: · There could be DLLs on the
desktop. These could even be hidden. If there are DLLs on the desktop, just
move them to some other location. Also search for a DLL by the name Advert.dll.
If found, rename it to some other name. · Your IE's internal Java
Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler is enabled, and the Web page you are loading
contains a Java program that is incompatible with the compiler. Go to Tools
> Internet Options > Advanced. Just uncheck the option, 'Enable Java JIT
compiler'. See if the error is resolved. · Another reason could be that the
Web page you are loading contains active content that is not functioning
properly. Try disabling this option in IE. Go to Tools > Internet Options
> Security, and then click the Enable ActiveX Controls And Plug-Ins check
box in the Active Content area to clear it. · There could be a problem with
your display card. Try reinstalling the card drivers as a last resort.
You
can use the Internet Explorer Repair tool to diagnose and help fix problems
with Internet Explorer 5 and above. The Repair Tool can identify problems with
Internet Explorer that are caused by files that are out of date. It tries to
fix problems that are caused by the incorrect or incomplete registration of
Internet Explorer files and restore or repair the desktop or Start menu
shortcut commands for the browser that have been deleted or do not function
properly. To use the Internet Explorer Repair Tool, go to Start > Settings
> Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. On the Install/Uninstall tab,
select Microsoft Internet Explorer 5, click Add/Remove, click 'Repair the
current installation of Internet Explorer', and then click OK. If Internet
Explorer 5 is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs, you may be able to start
the tool from the command prompt: Go to Start > Run, type rundll32
setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE"
/g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt" and click OK. This command is
case sensitive.
This
could be because Windows was not restarted after installing or updating files
that were in use by Windows. Some program installations or updates need to
replace files that are currently in use by Windows. Some files cannot be
replaced while Windows is running. Windows must be restarted so that these
files can be updated during the initial startup of Windows before they are
loaded into memory. Internet Explorer 5 detects that these operations are
pending and cannot be installed until these operations have been completed.
Restart Windows and run Internet Explorer 5 Setup again. If you receive the
error message again, try restarting Windows again. After Windows has
restarted, run Internet Explorer 5 Setup. If restarting Windows does not help
then try renaming the Wininit.ini file, restart the computer, and then run
Internet Explorer 5 Setup. If this also does not fix your problem then try
cleaning the Temporary Internet Files folder and the Temp folder.
